News From The Point

Many of our Subs elected to stay up a little late tonight to look up at the sky.  Jake from our Wilderness program, Megan from our Photography program and Brandon set up our camp telescope and several tripods.  We were able to look up as the stars came out and see them up close through the telescope.  The campers were able to learn about taking long exposures on their cameras, and even tried “light painting” where you use a flashlight to paint into a long exposure.  We even took some exposures long enough to see the stars move across the sky.

As the moon rose, we moved the telescope and looked up at the moon.  We first looked at the full disk, but then decided to zoom in at 160x magnification and saw a group of craters brought into striking relief by sunlight grazing across them.  This view of the moon was a whole new experience for the girls.

It was a beautiful day for a swim meet, and the Point O’Pines Swim Invitational was a great success. Many camps competed this morning at the Point O’Pines waterfront and did an incredibly great job. Point O’Pines finished the meet in first place, well ahead of all other competitors, and the Peakers’ freestyle relay even set a camp record! Swim Team Captain Fabiana showed great skill in the water and incredible sportsmanship on the beach as she led her team to it’s second victory!

We would like to give a warm Point O’Pines welcome to Madeline Elsie Himoff. She was born at 1:44 am PDT this morning in Los Angeles. She is eight pounds, three ounces and twenty-one inches. She, and her mommy and daddy, Andrea and Adam Himoff, are all doing great. Callie and Tessa are so excited that their cousin Isabel has a sister now!

Another week has gone by and more wonderful things are happening at the Point. The Inter As had a blast at Point O’Ritz, it was just phenomenal. Every bunk worked really hard and their imagination helped them create wonderful costumes. The Seniors were amazing as well. That night we all had the privilege to be present for one of the most wonderful staff Talent Shows ever seen at camp. We were delighted with all the talent we possess.

On Friday the Inter As were back at the farm with the new program of Farm and Fitness. Some did Ropes Course, others trained for 5K. Another group did gardening which was peaceful, relaxing, and most of all very educational.

So far camp is awesome and yet there is much more to come!

Thank you to all you Moms and Dads who have allowed me to share the enjoyment of spending time with your daughters.

These 2011 Peakers and Seniors have been doing a wonderful job showing our younger campers how great friends are formed. Who said Friendship was easy!

I am so proud of our 14 and 15-year-olds’ friendship skills. They have learned how to accept each other’s unique style and to rely on each other’s talents.

The homesick stage of our younger campers adjusting to separation from you has been much faster than last year. All our more sentimental girls have turned their need for support into a wonderful connection with the staff and the other campers. The bonds are made each day and we do feel like a summer family (and it is only the beginning of week three).

We have suddenly realized that before we know it, it will be Visiting Day and you will all be so excited to hug your loved ones. They are very busy little girls, as well as wonderful young women.

We hope you will be very proud of their development of new skills in activities and their socializing with each other.
