News From The Point

Every summer there is a 5K Charity Run in the Adirondacks to benefit local children’s healthcare.  The run is sponsored by the Hudson Headwaters Healthcare Network which operates 13 walk-in clinics from Glens Falls to the Canadian border.  The run takes place very close to camp and finishes at Suzie Q’s right here in Brant Lake.  Camp sponsors all Point O’Pines runners that qualify.  Campers quality by completing an in-camp training program that is part of our “Stay Fit for Life” activity in which all campers participate. 

We enter campers from ages 7 to 15 and staff as well, who run with the campers.  We usually enter about 175 campers and every camper is capable of finishing the run.  Not only is this run good for the community but it is a major accomplishment for most campers.  We are very proud of our girls and believe that this worthwhile event elevates the self esteem of all the participants.  It also encourages good eating habits and body training.

This years race was this morning, and the campers has a great time.  Congratulations to all the runners!

Tonight is Sub Night! Sub Night is the next step after Gold Rush in developing camper’s leadership growth.  Sub night is an evening activity game led by our Subs. This activity is built around a surprise theme planned by the campers. This year the theme was “Subbie-Os” with all our favorite breakfast cereals and their characters.

The Subs and their counselors create and show off character costumes. Sub Night features a series of game stations where groups of campers compete for points. The camp is broken down into small groups each lead by a Sub camper. The Sub takes her group from station to station to earn team points.  There are challenging trivia questions along the way which must be answered for bonus points. The winning team earns a special prize at the end.

At Point O’Pines older campers begin to assume responsibility early.  Each of the older groups beginning with the Inter B’s are responsible for leading the camp in important and traditional activities.  This process culminates with our Peakers who are the clear leaders at the Point with considerable responsibility in camp.  Gold Rush is the first step.  Gold Rush is an evening activity game contest where the Inter B’s select a surprise theme and build around the theme an activity where campers gather special colored rocks for points while avoiding going to jail.  The winning team earns the prize of a giant blondie cookie which is shared.
