News From The Point

This year’s Wacked-Up Relay was very exciting! While, after an early lead from Blue, White led the race, the Blue Team hung in there and actually kicked in some extra energy at the end. Blue was almost able to pull off a win if there was any misstep at all at can stacking, but, luckily for them, White stacked flawlessly. White won by only a very few seconds. So exctiting! We are proud of both teams and a great showing today.

Some of our recent alumnae visited us yesterday for a special day including the Schultzes’ Island swim, dinner on the beach and an evening activity called “Alumnae Mash-Up.”  At Alumnae Mash-Up the alumnae bested the campers at the very last moment in a competition which included word scrambles, “Minute to Win It“-style challenges and name that Team Sing song. Thanks to everyone who came to visit. We enjoyed seeing you so much!

Tonight we held our special campfire together to celebrate all those campers who have been at camp for five or more years.  So many wonderful heartfelt memories were shared. Our youngest campers got to help put a 9-year jacket on Peaker Charlotte.  It doesn’t seem like very long ago when I saw Charlotte help a 2003 Peaker (Peaker Erin, I believe) put on a jacket when she was just such a little girl.

Today we took advantage of clear skies to use the camp telescope.  Campers used our solar filter to look at sunspots on the surface of the sun.  This was a great experience for most of the girls who have never had the opportunity to safely look at the sun, especially at over 100-times magnification.  Campers from all age groups participated.  Some girls were very curious about what sunspots are and why they are actually a bunch of little spots close together rather than just one.  In the process, we learned a little about magnetism and how the sun “burns.”

We look forward to looking up at the starry sky on a future clear evening soon.

Last night we all enjoyed Point O’Ritz, our costume dinner and show.  Each bunk arrived in costumes they made together for hors d’oeuvres passed by the Peakers on main lawn.  The Area Heads, with Sherie and Erin, made a grand entrance with a well-choreographed dance routine, followed by the Seniors in costumes set to the song I’ll Stand By You.  After some time together we came into the dining room, also decorated for the event, and had a delicious dinner, and a spectacular array of desserts.  It was so hard to pick just one.

After dinner we all gathered in the Rec Hall for a show. A superbly talented staff and Lindsay Meade, a performer from right here in the Adirondacks, showed off their talents for the campers. A big surprise was a group of our support staff from Poland who rendered a jaw-droppingly fantastic rendition in both singing and dance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. This act drew a spontaneous standing ovation from everyone at camp.
