Girls Sleepaway Camp in the Adirondack Mountains in Brant Lake, New York
Today many of our campers (most actually) joined together to run or walk to support the Hudson Headwaters Healthcare Network which operates 13 walk-in clinics from Glens Falls to the Canadian border. The Camp contributes to HHHN to support kids’ healthcare in the local community.
Campers trained all summer in our fitness program to qualify to run the race. There was a great turnout and some fast running. We are so proud of the participants.
Last night there were fun and games all around camp. The subs hosted their big event of the summer at Sub Night. “Subbie Street” was this year’s theme in tribute to the characters that we grew up with and helped us learn and read. We had such a great time thanks to the Subs.
Last night the Inter B’s took us up into space with Gold Rush “On the Moon” 2013. In this game the campers explore camp looking for “gold” while contending with cops and robbers. This special event is the first major leadership role for the Inter B campers as they work towards their Peak summer. This year was a great success and we thank them for a great job!
This afternoon an intrepid group of campers joined Brandon and Jake for some telescope time. We learned how to use the camp telescope, a fairly large 5-inch refractor, with a special solar filter to look directly at the sun. The girls found two big sunspots and some small ones that we were able to sketch, as well as photograph. Campers learned that there can be magnetic storms on the sun, and interesting things to be seen even in a bright blue sunny sky. We hope you find these pictures as interesting as the campers did. If you do get a chance to see them safely, sunspots are really quite fascinating to look at.
This week the Inter As were able to explore the length of Brant Lake in canoes. Along with the Wilderness staff, the girls were able to paddle four miles in the canoes starting off at camp and landing at the farm. In those two hours they paddled, sang and took in the beautiful views along the lake. Once the girls landed at the farm, they hiked from the lake to their campsite, carrying the makings of a great campout at the farm.
While there was a little hard work, the girls all agree that it was well worth the effort. As the first group to complete this trip, the Inter As wowed us with their flexibility and willingness to try something new. We are so proud of all that they accomplished this week and hope that more girls will be able to have this awesome experience in the future.
